Will my jewellery tarnish?

Over time metals can tarnish, this could be due to atmospheric elements such as exposure to oxygen and skin acidity. Skin acidity levels differ in all people and higher levels will cause oxidisation in jewellery to occur faster.

The best way to clean your silver or gold jewellery is with Silvo or Brasso and a soft cotton cloth. Alternatively you can use warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinse with hot water and dry with a soft cloth.

You can prevent or at least slow your jewellery from tarnishing by storing it in an airtight bag or container and by only putting it on after you’ve washed the dishes, applied lotions or sprayed perfumes.

Will gold plated jewellery tarnish?

Gold plating is a process by which a thin layer of gold is coated onto the surface of jewellery. Extra care should be taken to prolong the lifespan of your plated jewellery. In order to do this avoid bringing your plated jewellery into contact with perfumes, oils, lotions and chemicals, rather only wear your jewellery once you are done working with those substances.

You should also remove your plated jewellery when you are exercising, swimming or in the shower or bath. Avoiding physical activity while wearing your plated piece and minimising the pieces contact with perfumes, lotions, chemicals and salt water and storing pieces safely away from other jewellery pieces will extend the life of the plating.

How do I get my ring size?

It is always best to send your exact size. Any jewellery store will be happy to help you get an exact ring size, please ask them for the UK sizing (this runs with the letters of the alphabet) not the US sizing (this uses numbers and their fractions of) but as a general rule the sizes are as follows:

x-small: H to I and a half
small: J to L and a half
medium: M to O and a half
large: P to Q and a half

The most accurate way to measure your ring size at home is to measure the inside diameter of a ring that fits the required finger. Get one of your rings that fits nicely and measure the inside diameter in mm’s as accurately as you can.
Place your ring on a ruler like in the example picture below to measure. Make sure to not add the metal of the ring to your measurement. You should only be measuring the width of the inside of the ring right in the middle.

Once you have measured the diameter in mm’s you can accurately see what ring size you are on the chart below. Scroll down to see what letter ring size you are.

Things to note:
• Measuring the circumference of your finger with a piece of string is not an accurate way to measure your ring size. The size will almost always end up way too big.
• Remember that your fingers swell on hot days. They can swell up to 1 or 2 sizes bigger. So keep in mind on what day you are measuring your finger.
• The fingers on your right hand are always about a size bigger than your left hand.
• The broader the ring, the tighter it will sit. So if you are planning to get a broad ring or many stacking rings for one finger, add a size or half a size for a comfy fit.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Engagement Rings

We recommend that all engagement rings receive a weekly or biweekly clean to clear out any residue from hand creams, dirt etc.

Cleaning at home is relatively easy, with warm soapy water (we suggest using a mild solution of sunlight liquid, preferably the yellow one).

You can use a soft toothbrush to brush out the back of the setting to revive the sparkle of your stone. This will help to clear the ring more regularly but we can do recommend a proper clean every 6 – 12months. Replating for rhodium plated rings should be done annually. You can use a jewellery polishing cloth as well to shine up the surface of the metal.

Sterling Silver

A jewellery polishing cloth can be used to buff up your favourite pieces but we do recommend that if you are not wearing your jewellery regularly, to store them in an airtight bag as the atmospheric air can lead to tarnishing of the metal.
If you have not worn your jewellery for a years months or years and they are very tarnished, an easy home method is to place a then in a piece of aluminium foil in a jar, cover with a bicarb and warm water and leave to soak for a few minutes. This is not recommended for pearls and some stones so please use this method at own risk.

Chains especially need to be treated with care as they can break if tugged on or caught on something.
